Garden design has come a long way in Ireland over the last decade. What was initially the sole preserve of an affluent few has at last filtered down to the general public, with the result that Ireland’s designers and associated businesses are experiencing an unprecedented boom.

My earliest memories of garden centre retailing are of being dragged, often in tears, from a makeshift castle that I’d created among bales of peat moss. Having been return to terra firma, I’d be led, often by the ear, through a labyrinth of darkened aisles, musty aromas filling my nostrils and fear inducing herbicide packaging filling my imagination with thoughts of toxic death potions.

...Barriers to Creativity
Watching the garden build up for the Bloom event it was interesting to note the different approaches taken by designers to the creation of spatial enclosures. The seasoned pros, used to the stage-set realities of show garden construction, quickly erected timber facades, which were rendered, painted and clad to appear as solid constructions. Those designers with less experience struggled with blocks, mortar and concrete.

Dealing directly with the recruitment side of your business can sometimes be a bit of a gamble. Aside from the time and money lost through advertising, processing and interviewing, you can never be sure that the dynamic, well-polished workaholic interviewee, won’t turn out to be a work-shy alcoholic with personal hygiene issues.
