2005 may well be remembered as the year that saw Irish garden design leap from a one-man band to a concert orchestra. While our leading light Diarmuid Gavin still beats his drum to the appreciation of the Chelsea throngs, he had to shift his instruments to make room for a whole new band of enthusiastic designers. Far from the feature-lead creations that have dominated much of the most recently publicised design work, the new Irish designers are coming to prominence armed with expert plant knowledge, in-depth spatial understanding and a willingness to tackle far more than simple aesthetics.
